School Therapeutic
Support Program
RHD’s School Therapeutic Services (STS) program at Leeds, Harding, Harrington, Beeber, and Longstreth, provides in-school behavioral health services. The program currently serves students in 6th through 8th grades. The STS program model began providing services in September of 2007.
The STS model assigns one BHRS service provider to each school. This has allowed school staff to develop better working relationships with the mental health professionals working in their school than in the past, when there were often many different BHRS providers in a given school. This has allowed for the development of a much more efficient service.
STS services are mental health treatment services developed as an alternative to traditional “wraparound” services in school settings. Similar to existing school based behavioral health programs, the STS program at Leeds provides a full range of therapeutic services.
STS strives to provide age-appropriate behavioral health interventions to reduce barriers to learning resulting from existing behavioral or emotional problems. Services and interventions occur within the context of the regular school day to ensure that academic work remains a child’s primary focus. In addition, for some children, the STS program reduces the stigma associated with having an individual TSS with the child throughout the school day.
Our employee roles include the following:
School Therapeutic Services Worker (STS): Similar to a TSS, the STS is a bachelors-level one-on-one behavioral health worker. STS's work with up to three children at a time. Their role is to work closely with each child in the classroom setting to help him or her improve their behavior.
Lead Clinician (LC): This role replaces the BSC in traditional BHRS. The lead clinician supervises and supports STS workers, develops the client’s treatment plan, monitors progress, coordinates treatment, and works with parents and the school administration.
Mobile Therapist (MT): Mobile therapists conduct individual and group therapy with children enrolled in the STS program.
Referrals for the Leeds STS program usually come from school staff members as part of the Comprehensive Student Assistance Process (CSAP). Once an individual is referred to the program, his or her parents will be asked to take part in a comprehensive evaluation with a licensed psychologist. Using input from parents/caregivers, the child, and school staff, the evaluator will determine whether participation in the Leeds STS program is warranted.
During each child’s participation in the program, STS staff will monitor his or her progress and update the treatment plan as needed. Overall, outcomes for each child will be assessed based on the extent to which he or she has made improvement on treatment goals and in terms of overall academic performance.
